Frequently Asked Questions What age group to tryout for? Players will try out according to their grade level because our club does not travel outside of the North Country Region. The following are the grade and age group levels: 12s: 6th Grade & Under 13s: 7th Grade 14s: 8th Grade 15s: 9th Grade 16s: 10th Grade 17s: 11th Grade *Special circumstances will be looked at upon an individual basis. Fourth graders can tryout for 12s! What is the time commitment? All age levels will practice 2 nights per week and practice will begin the first week of December. 12s: There will be 9 weekend dates. This will include league play-days and tournaments, beginning in January and ending mid to late March. 13-17s: There will be 10 weekend dates. This will include league play-days and tournaments, beginning in January and finishing the end of March or early April. What is a play-date & tournament? A play-date is a league day, which will either be through the Heartland Adidas League, Ralia Power League or Twin Cities Elite Volleyball League. Heartland Adidas League is played in the northwestern suburbs and plays on Sundays. The teams will play in either the morning or afternoon shift, which is typically consistent throughout the league dates. Ralia Power League is played in Maple Grove at the Ralia Sports Center. This league has 4 shifts: morning & afternoon on Saturday & Sunday (will only play in 1 shift). The day and time will differ between the league weekends because play is determined by league standings and teams played to keep play competitive. Twin Cities Elite Volleyball League will be played in Spring Lake Park on Sundays, a morning and afternoon shift which stays consistent throughout the season. All leagues typically set up play-dates using 4-team pools: each team plays 3 matches & will officiate 1-2 matches. These dates usually last up to 6 hours and will make up half of the weekend schedule. Tournaments are played on either Saturday or Sunday, with the exception of the President’s Day Festival which is both Saturday & Sunday, and counts as 2 dates. Typical format starts at 8 am with pool play followed by single-elimination bracket play. Keep in mind, each tournament will set up differently. Tournaments typically last around 6-10 hours and will make up half the schedule. When & where are practices, playdates and tournaments located? Practices are typically held at Jackson Middle School and Oxbow Elementary in Champlin. Practices are held from 6:00-10:00 pm with each lasting 1.5-2 hours in length. The 12s team will not practice until 10 pm, with the exception of an occasional Friday night practice. Playdates and tournaments are typically held at local Twin Cities facilities. Each team will mostly likely have one overnight tournament. In the past teams have traveled to St. Cloud, Brainerd, Rochester and Mankato, where they have stayed in a hotel. Travel expenses will not be covered by the club. How much does it cost at each age level and what is the payment plan? 12s: $535 13-17s: $635
Each fee is based on 9 or 10 players per team. This does not include the cost of a quality indoor volleyball, which every player must have (typical cost is $30). This fee covers: Uniforms, League Fees, Gym Time, Tournament Costs, Certification for Refereeing, North Country Region Volleyball Membership Fees, Team Equipment and Coaches Fees. The club fee will be paid in 2 payments. Due at tryouts is $300 for 12s players and $400 for 13-17s players. A post-dated check for 1/25/10 will be written on the night of the club meeting for $235 to cover the remaining club expenses. For any player who does not make a team, the club fee check written at tryouts will be voided. Are there fundraising opportunities? Parents may volunteer to coordinate fundraising activities for the club, which will be decided upon at the club meeting on Monday, Nov 23. Fundraising varies year to year; it depends on parent volunteers. All fundraising is completely voluntary. All money earned will be distributed between players who participate. Some options for this season include Tupperware and The Chip Shoppe. Brochures will be available at the club meeting. If you have any suggestions, please bring the information to the club meeting. Are players allowed to tryout at an older age level? Every player must begin trying out at their designated age level. If the coaches feel a player has strong skills and a positive attitude, then the coach will ask the player to tryout at a higher age level. Players trying out on Sunday may need to also come to Monday’s tryouts if they are asked to tryout at the older age levels. This does not guarantee the player will make a higher age level. Coaches will consider the overall fit including skill level, position performance/need and attitude. How are teams selected? Each player is evaluated on her volleyball skills, attitude, position placement and team fit. All coaches have input on all team selections. To keep teams competitive in the North Country Region, teams at each level will be made with the top 9 or 10 players. If there are an additional 9 or 10 players at an age level who will be competitive in NCR, an additional team will be made. Our club will try to avoid merging of ages to make a team or additional team at an age level. What is the letter of commitment? Each player and parent is required to sign the letter of commitment at the club meeting on Monday, November 23. By signing the letter, it means you are committed to the club for the entire 2009-10 season. After turning in the letter of commitment to the club, you are not allowed to leave for the entire season to play for another team. If a player chooses not to play for the team they made, they will forfeit their ability to play for any team participating in North Country Region Volleyball for the remainder of the season. The letter is required by every club in the region. This letter is enforced to protect teams from losing players who originally were placed on the team. Who are the coaches? Coaches consist of past Junior Olympic (JO) players who have played during high school and some in college, many are former Champlin Park players. Most coaches continue to play recreational volleyball as well. Most of our coaches have coached several years with us and/or with other clubs. Each team will be coached by 2 coaches. Please refer to the coach’s page for information on each coach. |
